Pakistan student guide

Common F-1 and M-1 preparation questions.

Practical answers based on current U.S. government guidance. Requirements and procedures can change, so applicants should confirm the latest instructions on official websites.

What is the difference between an F-1 and M-1 student visa?

F visas are generally for academic and language-training programs. M visas are generally for vocational or other recognized nonacademic programs. Your school and Form I-20 identify the appropriate student classification for your program.

What is Form I-20, and when do I receive it?

After acceptance, a school certified by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program can issue Form I-20. Check that your personal and program information is accurate, sign the form as instructed, and keep it with your visa and travel records.

Do I need to pay the I-901 SEVIS fee?

Most new F-1 and M-1 students must pay the I-901 SEVIS fee before the visa interview. Use the official FMJfee website, confirm that the SEVIS ID matches Form I-20, and keep the payment confirmation. Follow official instructions if an exception applies.

What should I organize for the visa interview?

Official guidance generally lists a valid passport, DS-160 confirmation page, application-fee receipt when required, a photo if the online upload failed, and Form I-20. A consular officer may also request academic records, test scores, evidence of how educational and living costs will be paid, and information showing your intent to depart after your studies.

Can a consultant guarantee a student visa or an interview date?

No. A U.S. consular officer decides each visa application under U.S. law, and appointment availability can change. Gillani Visa Services provides non-legal administrative preparation and cannot guarantee approval, an appointment, or any outcome.

Know the official process

The course and school determine the student visa category.

The U.S. Department of State explains that academic study generally requires an F visa, while vocational or other recognized nonacademic study generally requires an M visa. Applicants normally begin after acceptance by an approved school and issuance of Form I-20.

SEVIS, fee, interview, and document instructions can change. Confirm every current requirement through official sources.
